Linux Fun

I realized this evening that I actually already have perl and apache installed on the one functioning Linux machine in my apartment, my trusty revision A iMac. Hmm… now I just need to install MySQL and php.

Qube Quorner

A lot of cool stuff is brewing over at Scripting News. For instance today Dave Winer announced a manila based weblog called Qube Quorner. It will cover the Cobalt Qube of course.

I’ve got an old Mac clone sitting around that I’m hoping I can turn into a Qube equivalent. I just want a Linux box that I can remotely administer and do stuff with and that’s exactly what Cobalt’s products are.

Assorted Links

Webmonkey has a useful article comparing the pros and cons of four server side scripting languages: ASP, ColdFusion, Perl, and PHP. Personally I’m hoping to give PHP a try on one of my home machines sometime soon, and further down the road a little modperl action. Of course it’s always a matter of finding the time to do it.

Hey all you basketball fans. December 4th in Cleveland baby!

Fruit Loops I kiss you. I hear a tour with Mahir is in the works…

Even though in most ways I agree with the recently released Findings of Fact against Microsoft, as a resident of Washington State I’ve had similar thoughts about how what’s bad for Microsoft is bad for the local state economy.

Here’s an interesting dissenting view on the whole Microsoft deal. [via Scripting News]

I see that I’m starting to get some hits now that I’ve gone public so to speak. Welcome to all new readers!

Some handy test taking advice?

Have you driven a Ford lately? Ouch!

Wow! The Seahawks are 6-2 and guess who’s coming back? Joey inflated self-worth Galloway.

Saw The Bone Collector this afternoon. I would describe it as a gruesome yet entertaining movie overall.

Stadium View

Wow! Here’s a cool office window view if you’re a baseball fan.

I wonder if any of the large office buildings to the north of Safeco Field in Seattle can see the field when the roof is retracted? I know that even with the roof closed you can see into the stadium a bit from I-5 as you drive by; obviously that’s not the best place to be looking at the passing scenery or watching baseball games.

Microsoft Findings Excerpt

The concluding paragraph of Judge Jackson’s findings leaves me with the impression that the jig may be up for Microsoft:

412. Most harmful of all is the message that Microsoft’s actions have conveyed to every enterprise with the potential to innovate in the computer industry. Through its conduct toward Netscape, IBM, Compaq, Intel, and others, Microsoft has demonstrated that it will use its prodigious market power and immense profits to harm any firm that insists on pursuing initiatives that could intensify competition against one of Microsoft’s core products. Microsoft’s past success in hurting such companies and stifling innovation deters investment in technologies and businesses that exhibit the potential to threaten Microsoft. The ultimate result is that some innovations that would truly benefit consumers never occur for the sole reason that they do not coincide with Microsoft’s self-interest.

So what’s the solution going to be? Breaking Microsoft into an applications company and an OS company?

Microsoft Findings

Looks like the MS findings website is partially slashdotted. I have succeeded in downloading a good chunk of the document however and intend to comment more once I have had a chance to peruse its contents.

Okay, so it’s a week after I first heard it might happen, but the judge overseeing the Microsoft antitrust case is finally releasing his finding.

Spacegirl Paper Doll

Spacegirl has come up with a fairly amusing little online paper doll self portrait. [requires Flash]

Bump finally has a new update after a three week hiatus. Excellent!

REALbasic 2.0 And Frontier 6.1

REALbasic is definitely a nifty development tool for the Macintosh. I’ve been playing with it off and on since it was first introduced, but I hadn’t worked with version 2.0 until today. Cool stuff!

I may have to pick up Matt Neuberg’s new book.

I’m looking forward to the release of Frontier 6.1. I’m hoping to use it at work for the School of Education’s web site. The manila “edit this page” functionality is definitely intriguing.

Voting Day

Whew! I am incredibly tired right now. It’s been a long tiring day. I did manage to vote after work for the first time in a couple years. Mary voted for the first time ever!

After voting tonight it occurred to me that senior citizens always seem to be the people running the places I’ve gone to vote at. I wonder if that’s merely because they’re the main group of citizens in our country that have a lot of free time on a given Tuesday or perhaps they come from an era that takes voting a little more seriously then many younger people do. Considering the levels of voter apathy these days does that mean that someday when we’re all senior citizens they’ll be problems staffing the voting booths? Oh wait, it’ll all be done on the Internet by then anyway right?
