New PowerBook

In a move aimed at making my trusty digital camera a little more useful I finally broked down and bought a USB to serial adaptor. I also bought an ADB to USB adaptor so I can put my old Wacom ArtZ tablet to work again as well. Considering what I see 6″x8″ usb tablets going for today it’s well worth the price.

Yeah! The PowerBook has arrived. Time to see what Apple’s latest can do!

Waiting For A PowerBook

Still no PowerBook.

Up until the point when the clouds started rolling in, today has been a surprisingly warm spring day. From what I’ve heard we’re supposed to get some rain later on today, but it (like the missing PowerBook) hasn’t shown up quite yet. I think I’ll check the doppler radar and see what’s going on. I just wish their was a website that offered University wide delivery tracking.

On one of the many weblogs I peruse, mthology.com I saw mention of the fact that the Pyra-maniacs are working on a Palm VII app that offers blogger support. Wireless weblogging sounded pretty cool to me so yesterday I signed up with Palm’s developer support to see if I could download the ROMs and stuff that I’d need to play with the emulator at least. Unfortunately, despite the fact that I’ve got a static ip here at Gonzaga we don’t have reverse dns configured and Palm’s cheezy web script couldn’t verify that I was in the US. So after filling out all that info and waiting a day for activation I still couldn’t download the Palm VII ROM since it’s got some form of 128bit encryption and is thus two strong for export. Maybe when I get back home.

Computer Delivery Woes

I was supposed to have a new PowerBook delivered to my office today and it never came. That’s a little bit disturbing. A few weeks back I was supposed to have a new iMac delivered and I found it by accident in the office of a faculty member who no longer works for the university, but hasn’t moved his stuff out yet. I wasn’t very thrilled about the whole thing.

Manila And SXSW

Today Dave Winer announced all the cool stuff Userland will be demoing at Manilapalooza. There’s a variety of interesting things on the agenda, but I’m especially looking forward to playing with Pike when it comes out. Too bad I can’t make it to the meeting.

It’s been fairly entertaining to read everything the various SXSWers have had to say once they’ve returned home. I’ve had various web related ideas of my own that I’ve wanted to work on beyond just daily weblogging, now it’s simply a matter of doing it.

LinuxPPC 2000

I’ve spent part of tonight installing LinuxPPC 2000 on an upgraded Power Computing box that I’ve had sitting half assembled on my kitchen table for the last three or four months. I’m still not sure where I’m going to put it once I have it in a functional state though because my apartment is fairly small. I guess probably somewhere in the living room so it can be close to my network hub.

Lunchtime Talk Radio

For lunch I decided to drive over to the nearby Taco Bell and get my usual 7-layer burrito, medium Dr. Pepper and in today’s case a cheese quesadilla (sometimes I get a bean burrito instead for the third item, but pretty much always the first two). Part of the reason I decided to risk losing my parking spot to go off campus for lunch was so that I could sit in my car and listen to the radio. Since Gonzaga has been doing so well in the men’s tournament I figured the talk radio station I usually listen to would be focusing on that topic as well.

Sure enough, Gonzaga’s basketball team was the dominant theme of today’s broadcast. In the first half hour I got to hear the opinions of a newspaper columnist from Lafayette, Indiana (home of Purdue, Gonzaga’s coming opponent), as well as some discussion of basketball team racial makeup and the adjectives applied to teams (supposedly there was an article in USA Today related to this topic, but I wasn’t able to find it online). The best part of the show to me however, came right after the half hour news break when basketball hall of famer Jerry Lucas called in. I was familiar with the name, but not all that familiar with his history or accomplishments. Apparently since retiring from basketball he’s dedicated his life to developing memorization and learning techniques to help revolutionize education and his web site has all kinds of information on this topic.

Sweet 16 Once Again

Blogger seemed to be out of service yesterday, otherwise I would have said something celebrating Gonzaga’s return to the Sweet 16. That’s two years straight. Wow!

The Pac-10’s two number one seeds got eliminated in the second round and UCLA (a team that was fairly lucky to even make the tournament) crushed Maryland and is back in the Sweet 16 for the third time in four years.

It’s all about peaking at the right time.

IE 5 On The Way

Good news on IE 5 for the Mac from MacNN:Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 Product Manager Irving Kwong has confirmed to MacNN that IE 5.0 will not be delayed and will be released by the end of March, countering comments made by Microsoft representatives in London Friday: “Microsoft doesn’t usually comment on rumors,” Kwong said. “However, Internet Explorer 5 Macintosh Edition is still on target for a March release.” Numerous spokespeople with Microsoft UK are being quoted as saying an IE 5 update will be delayed until the July/August timeframe.

Whew!

Zags March Madness

Looks like Mozilla may end up becoming my browser of choice by the time Internet Explorer 5 for the Mac is released. According to this article at MacCentral there’s some confusion at Microsoft as to when it’s going be released and some of their people were even indicating June or July now.

The Zags continued their NCAA tournament winning ways by outshooting Lousiville yesterday. I think tomorrow’s game against St. Johns should be a good one.

Just like last year at this time, March Madness is once again gripping both Spokane and the Gonzaga University campus. Yesterday all three local television stations were out in force around work here and I’m sure they’ll be back tomorrow. It seemed like there were a lot fewer people out and about around campus just prior to game time, I imagine they were all finding spots to watch the big game.

Pyra Hire

Uh oh. The folks at Pyra have a new member joining their ranks! Blogger will never be the same.
