Unmotivated

I’m not particularly motivated to post anything significant at the moment. Maybe later.

M’s Win

Seattle 5, Boston 2! It looks like the Mariners have finally got some life in their bullpen.

Server Wrestling

Today has been a real day for server wrestling. I think I’ve finally fixed the file server that’s been tormenting me of late (fingers crossed), but I may find out otherwise tomorrow morning. When I came into work tonight I was leaning towards just reinstalling NT 4 as this particular box had crashed four or five times over the course of the workday for no apparent reason. Luckily I realized that I did have a fairly recent repair disk and hopefully averted a whole lot of personal trauma.

All things considered it’s still been a good day.

Dinner With The Grandparents

I may never work in the software industry, but I still find it immensely fascinating to hear what it’s like on the inside. Joel on Software is an exceptional new weblog covering this topic. [via rc3.org]

I’m pretty excited about the new baseball season and the Mariners chances (even without Griffey). My grandparents are big Mariners fans too; last night Mary and I went over to their place for dinner and as an added bonus caught the last few innings of the M’s home opener as well.

One slightly amusing note about the visit: I expected the the M’s game to be on when we arrived at my grandparents, but I was quite surprised to hear that so many of their neighbors seemed to be listening as well when we reached their floor . As we walked down the long hallway toward their apartment we slowly realized that all the game noise was emmanating from their open door. My grandma (who is quite hard of hearing) had the tv on and a radio turned up so high that it carried all the way down the hall. It kind of reminded me of life in the dorms back in college.

At any rate the dinner was great, the M’s lost to Boston 2-0 in a real pitching duel, and I got to help my grandparents figure out some vcr problems they were experiencing. All in all a fun night.

Blogging Road Blocks

The funny thing about the whole Blogger upgrade was that as soon as I knew I couldn’t post, I suddenly had all these different things I wanted to say. I think I’ve forgotten a lot of what I wanted to say in the intervening moments.

More Server Woes

I guess I’d better post while I can since the Pyra folks are going to be doing a big database server upgrade soon.

Speaking of servers, my main server crashed yet again today, this time while I was off at a big campus technology group meeting. Luckily I had one of my fellow NT administrators help me do some tweaking that may solve its crashing issues. Time will tell.

Internet Music

I’ve really let my music listening habits kind of go by the wayside for a while now. It’s been literally months since I’ve bought a new cd. A new version of the SoundJam came out today though, so I’ve been trying out some icecast mp3 broadcast streams at icast.com for the first time tonight.

I think LinuxPPC includes the icecast server as part of their 2000 distribution. I’ll have to play with that down the road.

Pyra’s new Blogger Auto Text Bookmarklet is kind of cool, but will require some creativity on my part to be really useful. I can type fast enough that using it to just insert a pair of common tags like and isn’t completely useful. A longer javascript fragment could be worthwhile though I suppose. One thing I’d really love to see down the road in Blogger is shortcut support a la Userland’s Manila.

Server Mysteries

I’m having minor server woes at work this week. For some reason our main file server has been mysteriously rebooting and I haven’t figured out why. According to the server’s UPS log there was a power fluctuation over the weekend, but nothing shows up for last night and the event log isn’t particularly informative either. I guess I’ll have to keep a closer eye on things for a while.

Spring Thoughts

It’s sure sunny and beautiful here in Spokane today. I think I adjust a lot better to the spring time change than I do the fall one. I need to get out and start riding my bike now.

I’m hoping tonight’s NCAA basketball final is a lot better than yesterday’s. Tennessee completely stunk it up in the women’s final against Connecticut.

EvHead Bench Comic

It’s now official. The birthday comic strip I whipped up for EvHead is now available at thebench.org.
