Axodys - Greymatter Edition

Well, I’ve decided to go ahead and activate the Greymatter incarnation of Axodys even though I haven’t completed my redesign. Hopefully I’ll get that knocked out in the next couple days, but we’ll just have to see. Life has a way of intruding on my computer time, but better that than the other way around.

There may be some glitches as I get everything configured so bear with me and in the meantime enjoy all the newfound functionality that Greymatter provides.

iMovie 2 action

I finally had the right combination of time and inspiration last night to install iMovie 2 and start playing with it. I used clips from about five minutes worth of tape I took last Saturday (using the MiniDV camera I borrowed from work), added some titles and transitions and output a minute long movie of Magnum, my in-laws new Weimeraner.

I was really impressed with how smoothly the whole process went. Importing and exporting film clips worked flawlessly with the MiniDV camera I was using, and creating smaller Quicktime movies was quite easy as well. I have fiddled around with similar programs like Premiere in the past and while iMovie was not as fully featured its ease of use and range of functionality seemed just right for jazzing up home movies.

I’m definitely looking forward to getting my own MiniDV camera down the road here (note to self: get model with analog AV inputs). Time to start saving my money up.

Random Quickies

Track the travels of your cash using www.wheresgeorge.com. I’ll have to play with this at some point. It looks like there are a lot of people participating so I’m surprised I hadn’t come across this before. Hmm… looks like it was mentioned on Metafilter back on January 8.

Confluence.org is another nifty Internet project that I found via the previous Metafilter link. “The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures and stories will then be posted here.”

It looks like there are at least a few confluences in Eastern Washington that haven’t been visited yet so Mary and I could take some day hiking trips I bet. I’ve wanted to get a GPS for a while, maybe I should start doing research again on inexpensive models that support Macs (and hopefully direct USB connections).

Time for a little Conan.

For whatever reason, lately I’ve found myself unable to get to sleep as early as normal. I wouldn’t call it insomnia because I’m usually weary enough by 1 AM to finally get to sleep, but it’s somewhat bothersome. The upside is that I can actually watch the Conan O’Brien show once in a while.

Greymatter Update

Although I’ve succeeded in importing all my previous entries into Greymatter I’m still running into a problem when it comes to Greymatter updating the individual archive pages. When rebuilding entries it starts out great (roughly 90 entries per minute), but then completely tapers off around entry 134 (roughly 4 entries per minute) and eventually times out completely. Considering I currently have almost 700 entries this is fairly bothersome.

I’ve gone over my entries in the 100 to 150 range to see if there are any formatting bugs that might be tripping Greymatter up, but I haven’t seen anything conclusive. I’ve poked around the cgi scripts a tiny bit, as well, but I’m somewhat doubtful that the problem lies there as I haven’t heard other people complaining about the problem on the message boards.

Aside from the entry issue my two remaining tasks related to Axodys involve creating a new layout and than moving everything over to my new ISP. Hopefully I will be able to take accomplish both tasks over the weekend.

Punctuation Test

I’m curious as to what Greymatter does with various punctuation marks.
“~~!!@@##$$%%^^&&**()-_+={{}}\][;’:”?/>.<,

That should about cover it.

Conversion Complete! (Almost)

I’ve got things just about ironed out after my big move, but I’m still running into a couple glitches.

I need to test out some different things and see what happens.
