Random Stuff

Today seems to be going by kind of slow for some reason, but I did have a meeting at 11 AM that was moderately entertaining and that helped speed things up.

My summer league team has their second game of the season tonight against our South Hill rival Lewis & Clark. Now I just have to figure out how play the top players enough to pull out a victory while giving all twelve players the playing time they deserve.

Programming Project Idea

Brad Fitzpatrick (the Livejournal guy) mentioned a little Spanish vocabulary quiz program he wrote a while back that he still uses for other classes. I should whip up something similar in REALbasic just for the fun of it. I’m not taking any classes at the moment, but there are always various facts that I wouldn’t mind learning. For instance for web work it would be handy to memorize all the CSS properties. Actually it just occurred to me that to go a step further it would be quite useful to have a program that can present graphical items as well for identification. That would be especially useful.

I should fiddle around with a REALbasic version and then try create a web based one using php or python. Should be a handy little programming exercise. Cool.

Musings

I think I may go up to Northtown (a mall fairly near where I work) and checkout the Barnes and Noble at lunchtime. Supposedly Gonzaga employees get a 20% discount at that store and I’m somewhat curious to find out if that’s the case.

I haven’t purchased any computer books lately and there are several that have come out recently that I’m at least curious to look at (if not buy). Zeldman’s book, the new ORA Python Standard Library book, Learning Cocoa and probably at least a few others that I can’t think of at the moment.

Rainy days like today just seem like a logical time to go to a bookstore.

Daily Update

Ferris Team I lost to Mead in the summer tournament they were playing in this weekend. It was disappointing, but not completely surprising. Mead played us close in the first encounter of the year and I expect several more tough games with them over the summer and coming season.

Mary and I went out to dinner at some friends’ house this evening. The fish was excellent and their twin three year old boys were cute and highly entertaining.

Busy Day

Today consisted of sleeping in a little, visiting my mom for a few hours, a summer tournament basketball game, visiting Mary’s parents, a summer tournament basketball game, dinner at Noodle Express with Mary and my mom, and finally a showing of The Animal. I’m tired out.

Random blogstuff

I randomly surfed over to www.girlinblack.com after seeing it on weblogs.com and I discovered this entry about Corissa Yasen, the local athlete who was found dead in her home a few weeks back. Strangely I hadn’t heard any further information about the case in the local media since I first mentioned it here, but at the time I wondered if she might have taken her own life. I find it very strange that the story seems to have dropped off the radar here in Spokane and that the cause of her death hasn’t been released.

Conan is a very funny man.

Robbed from the ungrateful pages of Metafilter, Conan O’Brien’s Commencement Speech to the Harvard Class of 2000.

Maybe I’ll stay up and watch his show tonight, it’s been a few weeks at least since I last watched his show.

Michal’s Article Is Out

I knew from reading his blog that Michal had been working on an article for O’Reilly, but when I stumbled across the actual article over at onlamp.com it wasn’t until I saw the first Gantt chart that I realized he was the author. Kind of funny.

I see now that he linked to the article yesterday.
