What is Bitzi?

I discovered today that Matt Haughey has a new job at Bitzi. I had never heard of Bitzi until now, but it’s a company working on a very interesting idea:
Bitzi provides an essential utility for the world of effortless and decentralized digital distribution: a cooperative community catalog for all kinds of digital files ñ music, software, books, images, videos ñ anything and everything.

Now if I could only get the Bitcollider source code to successfully compile under MacOS X.

Sad News

I found out today that Evan Sprague, one of my first student work studies here at Gonzaga, was killed in a car accident July 9. I didn’t know Evan particularly well, but he seemed like a pretty good guy, and he was one of my better work studies. It made me sad to hear that someone with his whole life ahead of him could have it come to an end so abruptly.

Searching around on the web for more information about Evan and the accident that ended his life, I discovered that at some point (probably while working in the lab here) he had created an extensive web site about his favorite actors. I wish I’d know what a big movie fan he was while he worked here, I’m sure we could have had some interesting conversations.

Back in Spokane

Mary and I made the drive back to Spokane safely after a 1.5 hour stop at North Bend to do a little shopping at the outlet mall there. Most of our time was spent in the Nike store where we each ended up buying a pair of shoes. Because most of the shoes there are significantly marked down, it’s very possible to get a pair of quality shoes for $50 or less if you search around a little bit.

Last night in Seattle

Well, tonight is the last night in Seattle for Mary and me. We’ll be heading back to Spokane tomorrow afternoon after a couple stops to do a little shopping. This afternoon we drove down to Mary’s sister’s and had a little barbecue and hung out.

The Mariners won 3-2 today to win their three game series with the Giants.

Overall it’s been a fun weekend, but I wish I had had more time do computing stuff.

Afternoon linkage

Cam found an excellent article on PHP security today. A Study in Scarlet: Exploiting Common Vulnerabilities in PHP Applications

I should try downloading some larger files just to see what kind of throughput this cable modem is really capable of.

Speaking of PHP, monaural jerk is an interesting looking web journal application written in PHP. [via Q Daily News]

Random Seattle Stuff

Did a little exercising this morning with Mary. We ran for about twenty minutes, and made it about two miles I think. I’m a little sore now, but it felt good to go for a run again for the first time in months. I always find that it’s easier to go running for the first time in Seattle than in Spokane and I attribute that to the roughly 2000 foot difference in elevation between the two cities.

I came across a nifty keyboard and mouse replacement product from FingerWorks. It’s basically a giant keyboard sized curved touchpad that can also recognize gestures. Very cool!

M’s win!

And in a fitting conclusion to tonight’s lengthy battle with the Giants, the Mariners closed out the game with a clutch 4-3 victory. Mary and I had talked about trying to go to one of their games during our stay here in Seattle, but we’re probably out of luck at this point.

Driving into Seattle this evening, Mary and I were impressed with the progress on the new football stadium. It’s roof support structure, although immobile and split down the middle, is quite reminiscent of neighboring Safeco Field’s. Hopefully both fields will end up having significantly longer working lifespans than their ugly predecessor the Kingdome.

Live from Seattle it’s Thursday night!

I’m taking a little break from the Mariners game to type in a brief entry. Right now it’s in the 11th inning thanks to a game-tying home run by David Bell in a game San Francisco was leading 3-2.

I’m actually in Seattle at the moment house sitting for Mary’s brother. He has a cable modem so my Internet situation is not that different from home.

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to play with this over the weekend. Incidentally, A-OK! The Wings of Mercury, the educational Mercury spacecraft simulator developed by the author of the article looks very cool.
