Northwest Sports

This ended up being a good weekend for all the Northwest teams that I follow. Yesterday WSU beat Stanford to bring their record to 6-0 and stake a claim at a top 25 ranking. Then today the M’s came back from yesterday’s blow out loss and beat the Tribe 6-2 to send the series back to Seattle for the deciding game. And in the most surprising outcome of weekend the Seahawks beat Denver 34-21 to move to 3-2.

Functional Programming in Python

I took an Overview of Computer Languages CS course back in college so I have a little bit of exposure to functional languages, but this article was an interesting refresher that simultaneously demonstrated yet again why Python is so nifty. Charming Python: Functional programming in Python, Part 1

Up Early And Being Productive

I’m up quite early on a Saturday because the maintenance workers cleaning up the empty apartment next door left a radio blaring—

ALL

NIGHT

LONG.

I heard it last night as I was going to sleep, but I assumed it was a wedding up at the Corbin Center or something. But the noise continued throughout the night and this morning at 5 something AM when I awoke to what had to be a loud unattended radio somewhere in the vicinity I was not a happy person.

I dragged myself out of bed and walked out into our living room to see if the noise was coming from the courtyard. Silence.

Okay, that means the noise is probably coming from the apartment next door.

Ear to wall.

Hmm… sounds kind of like music playing loudly in an apartment devoid of any content or people. Did the neighbors move out recently?

Back to living room to peer out our windows at the couple visible windows from the apartment next door.

Hey, the blinds are open. A few lights are on… I bet a maintenance guy was cleaning up the place, left, and completely forgot about his loud echoing tunes.

Return to bed. Mary is not sleeping. Mary wants to report this to somebody in charge. Put random clothes on. Go downstairs with Mary. Figure out which room belongs to the building maintenance guys. Go down to their room. Ring obnoxious door buzzer. Wait. Ring obnoxious door buzzer. Wait.

Mary: “Did someone just walk up to the peep hole, look out and walk away?”

Me: “Maybe he needed to put some clothes on.”

Ring obnoxious door buzzer.

Shirtless, sleepy looking maintenance guy opens door. Explain situation to guy, guy realizes error and apologizes. Says we should have come by sooner.

Retreat to apartment, strangely awake.

Mary: “Now I’m too awake to go to sleep.”

Friday: Time To Flee

Just finished upgrading my powerbook’s RAM to a whopping 384 MB. MacOS X should really cruise now. Not that I was having any problems with 256 MB, but more is better right? Actually I considered shelling out the extra $50 that upgrading to a full blown 512 MB would require, but I just couldn’t justify it to myself in the end.

Fall definitely seems to have arrived this week with the onslaught of rain, highs just breaking 50°, and today’s generally windy conditions. Hard to believe we had 70° days a couple weeks ago. But I guess that’s Spokane weather for you.

Thankfully my workday finished a lot less hecticly than it started, but it was nice to be busy this morning.

M’s Win

The Mariners really turned the tables on the Indians with their quick start today. I only caught the first homerun because Fox Family went off the air for a good couple minutes immediately afterward. That was disappointing of course, but also kind of made for a pleasant surprise once they came back up. 4 points? They were just at 2…

Going into today’s game I had a feeling that Chuck Finley was going to be vulnerable, but I had no idea that the M’s would be able to take it to him so quickly. Cameron’s home run was definitely clutch, as he had two strikes at the time. Moyer did a great job too. It’s about time he got a post-season win.

Now it’s down to a three game series.

PHP on MacOS X

PHP on Mac OS X

“Mac OS X provides a great environment for PHP development. The BSD underpinnings of Mac OS X allow PHP to run as an Apache module in its native Unix environment. Using Mac OS X, programmers will see the same stability and extensibility from PHP they have seen in their production servers that run BSD, Linux, Solaris, and other Unix variants.”

M’s Lose

Colon, Indians suprise Mariners with six-hit shutout

I caught parts of the first three or four innings in between work, but then I had to leave for a meeting. Looks like the M’s have a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the resolve they’ve shown all season long come Thursday. I’m definitely going to move a tv into my office prior to the next game.

Aside from his base stealing gaff I thought Ichiro played pretty well during the first half of the game. Brett Boone on the other hand didn’t do as well as I had hoped. Colon is tough when he’s on though, no question. And Freddy was disappointing. A game like this makes Pete Gillick’s mid-season desire to get an elite pitcher all the more understandable.

Mariners Start Their Playoff Run

The MLB playoffs begin today and the Mariners start their run for the championship against the Cleveland Indians in less than a half hour. Although I’m certainly excited for the playoffs to begin I’m also a little sad that my dad isn’t around to experience it. He was a big Mariners fan and back in April during the last weeks of his life, one of his few remaining pleasures was watching these guys on TV. And they certainly didn’t let him down as they barrelled out of Spring Training. With a 16-4 record in the days before he died this Mariners team served notice that this was the start of something special. Now 100 wins later the regular season is over, but the memories remain. Thank you Seattle Mariners.

Movable Type Action

I’ve spent the majority of the evening updating the last hundred or so entries in Axodys and categorizing each and every one. It’s kind of fun but the downside is that it’s not exactly the quickest process. I’ve only managed to work my way back to mid July after an evenings work. On top of that I could really use multiple categories for some of the entries because the current system is a little confining. I hear it’s in the works though.

Well, it’s almost midnight and I’ve got a meeting I need to get up for bright and early. Time to turn in.

Trying Out Movable Type

I’m trying out Movable Type right now. It seems pretty nifty and the interface is quite pleasing to the eye. Importing Axodys over from Greymatter was slightly problematic, but only because of a typo in the importing instructions. After a bit of code exploration I verified that BODY; should have actually been BODY: and so 850-some find and replaces later (thank you BBEdit!) the entries successfully imported.

Now I need to take a look at the template system. I’ve been due for a new layout for far too long.
