The Geek Atlas

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

It’s been out since May, but I just stumbled across this today: The Geek Atlas – 128 Places Where Science and Technology Come Alive by John Graham-Cumming.

With this unique traveler’s guide, you’ll learn about 128 destinations around the world where discoveries in science, mathematics, or technology occurred or is happening now.

There’s also a related geekatlas.com website where readers can contribute photos, videos and trip reports about the 128 places.

Computer Books

Friday, March 3rd, 2000

Slashdot has Jakob Nielson’s responses for this week’s question and answer session. I actually came across his book at Barnes & Noble last weekend, but I chose to supplement my O’Reilly collection with Javascript: The Definitive Guide instead of forking out the serious cash his book is going for.

Incidentally, O’Reilly’s got an interesting article about CP4E, Guido VanRossum’s Computer Programming for Everybody project. The idea of teaching computer programming to everyone along with all the other usual subjects is certainly intriguing.

Fun With Latin

Wednesday, November 17th, 1999

It’s always important to get your daily dose of weird news.

Last Sunday during a visit to a local Barnes & Noble I picked up an introductory book on Latin called Learn Latin: A Lively Introduction to Reading the Language. It’s an interesting book so far. Coming from the perspective of three years of high school Spanish it’s cool to see an example of how language evolves over time.

Oddly enough it just occurred to me start looking for links to Latin resources on the Internet. It looks like there’s quite a bit of stuff out there actually. About.com seems to have a site specifically dealing with the Latin language that’s a good starting point.

REALbasic 2.0 And Frontier 6.1

Wednesday, November 3rd, 1999

REALbasic is definitely a nifty development tool for the Macintosh. I’ve been playing with it off and on since it was first introduced, but I hadn’t worked with version 2.0 until today. Cool stuff!

I may have to pick up Matt Neuberg’s new book.

I’m looking forward to the release of Frontier 6.1. I’m hoping to use it at work for the School of Education’s web site. The manila “edit this page” functionality is definitely intriguing.

Seattle Shopping

Sunday, June 20th, 1999

Mary and I headed back to Spokane today after a little bit of shopping at the U Village Barnes and Noble and REI. I bought a really cool red bike messenger bag at REI and four books at Barnes and Noble.

Searching For Owen Meany

Monday, May 24th, 1999

I went out to my family’s house to find my copy of A Prayer for Owen Meany so Mary could read it on her trip to Chicago and found out that their iMac had some issues.

The bad part was my initial attempt to solve the problem only made things worse! I ended up starting the system software reinstall process and promising to return the next day.

I managed to get my windshield replaced this afternoon to the tune of $172. Good thing I had been planning on doing it for a while.

Reflections On The State Championship Game

Tuesday, April 27th, 1999

I’m off to a an early start today for some reason.

I was going to go to bed early last night, but then I started reading GEB last night and then I followed that by writing down assorted random thoughts about my day (which took quite a while given all the things I had on my mind).

I watched the first half of the State championship game we lost to Walla Walla. It wasn’t particularly enlightening, but it did refresh my memory about a few impressions I had at the time.

I don’t think we ran any offense other than straight motion and we weren’t effective doing that at all against their defense. As things went from bad to worse in the first half our players started having more and more mental lapses and doing a lot of uncharacteristic things.

The Alienist

Thursday, April 8th, 1999

I finished The Alienist this morning. I enjoyed reading it quite a bit, although I think it did have a few flaws.

Looks like there’s a sequel out as well.

Currently Reading

Friday, February 5th, 1999

A Clash of Kings is finally out and all indications are that it’s even better than A Game of Thrones!

Speaking of books, right now I’m reading Belgarath the Sorceror after putting off buying it for a long time and I’m enjoying it a lot. I may have to go back and read the Belgariad again soon.

Just because I’ve got links to Amazon doesn’t mean they have the best prices. Get the ISBN number and then run it through this link.
