Computer Books

Slashdot has Jakob Nielson’s responses for this week’s question and answer session. I actually came across his book at Barnes & Noble last weekend, but I chose to supplement my O’Reilly collection with Javascript: The Definitive Guide instead of forking out the serious cash his book is going for.

Incidentally, O’Reilly’s got an interesting article about CP4E, Guido VanRossum’s Computer Programming for Everybody project. The idea of teaching computer programming to everyone along with all the other usual subjects is certainly intriguing.

Viper For Python

Looks like there’s a new Macintosh Python IDE in development called Viper. I haven’t played with the product yet because it seems to have a very limited release at this point, but it certainly sounds intriguing.

I’m hoping to find some time this weekend to play with Python a little on my own. I think I’d also like to start working on a site redesign as well.

PySol, Seahawks and Fireworks

This is too cool! Pysol is a cross platform Solitaire program written entirely in Python. Bye bye free time!

The Seahawks lost today and still managed to make the playoffs. It was kind of funny rooting for the hated Raiders to beat the Chiefs in overtime. I definitely didn’t think it was going to happen for a while there.

I downloaded the Fireworks 3.0 and Dreamweaver 3.0 demos today. I’m considering purchasing Fireworks and possibly Dreamweaver as well. The cool thing about Macromedia is that they let you play with their full products for 30 days.

End Of Year Plans

It’s the final countdown! Now if only I could get that old Europe song out of my head… Anyway I’m planning on staying home for the big change over myself. And with all the snow that we’re getting in Spokane right now, I’m betting more than a few people may change their minds about going out.

I’ve been going a little Python crazy lately. Last night while renting a few new years eve movies at the local Hastings I discovered they had a copy of Programming Python and snapped it up. I’ve pretty much decided to make Python my language of choice for right now. We’ll see how that goes.

Monday Update

Work today was totally dead. That wasn’t too bad because it gave me a chance to fiddle around with Python. It’s definitely a nifty scripting language.

Even cooler I stumbled across PUB (Python Universe Builder) a set of Python modules for creating interactive fiction games. I haven’t had a chance to experiment with the modules yet, but it looks promising. Probably not as rich and full featured as TADS or Inform, the two major IF oriented languages I’m familiar with, but intriguing none the less.

I’ve always wanted to create (write?) a text adventure along the lines of the classic Infocom games. Someday…

After an evening filled with shopping I am nearly done. Yes!
