Damien has posted a helpful primer on Understanding IP numbers and NAT refound on the wayback machine). One thing that you can do with NAT that he didn’t touch on is port forwarding, a method for making your internal network computers available to the rest of the internet through the firewall (dsl modem in this case) for specific tasks such as serving web pages . It’s something I’m hoping to do myself at some point in the future.
