Desktop Websites

I like where Dave Winer is going with the desktop webserver idea, especially the my.userland on the desktop. I use weblogs.com all the time to find recently updated weblogs, but it just makes a lot more sense to let my computer download the xml file his server generates and then do the processing gruntwork based on my preferences.

I was actually thinking of something along those lines last spring, but I was missing the idea of running a server on my desktop. Now it occurs to me that this idea could probably be carried out using Apple’s Web Sharing and a script (Python, MacPerl, or AppleScript) that runs once an hour and builds the update page based on some form of favorites file you’ve set up in advance. RadioUserland obviously has the advantage of having all the pieces of the puzzle running in an integrated environment.
