World Trade Center No More.

Mary woke me up this morning with the stunning news. The rest of the day is a blur of television reports and weblog reading. I emailed my friend Jesse, who works in Greenwich Village, wondering if he was okay. He replied a while later saying that he had been in the city when the buildings fell down, and that it had been a scary and bizarre day, but he was okay. That was a relief.

I don’t really have much else to say today. Actually that’s not true. I do have a couple thoughts:

First of all I’m more worried about future loss of civil liberties than future terrorist attacks. It’s easy to take rights away; it’s hard to give them back.

Secondly I expect and look forward to a strong response from the U.S. Military against the perpetrators of this atrocity and any country that gives them sanctuary. I just hope we can get it right the first time. And if Osama bin Laden is responsible, I hope we have the patience to come up with an effective means of snaring him rather than relying on brute force.
